It\u2019s usually caused by the removal of, or damage to, the lymph nodes, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/lymphedema\/basics\/definition\/con-20025603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the\u00a0Mayo Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-144524\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.newsner.com\/attachments\/images\/000\/213\/380\/newsner_default\/1375276_10151916795739304_748211431_n.jpg?1467709090\" alt=\"1375276_10151916795739304_748211431_n\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/meagan.barnard.7\/photos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Image Source<\/a><\/cite><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Meagan Barnard, lymphedema came at age 15. She felt abnormal, lonely and suicidal, and refused to talk about it with her\u00a0friends and family.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-06389b6e1261c89311aed6c90e5e3605\" class=\"newsner-06389b6e1261c89311aed6c90e5e3605 newsner-bluebillywig_instream\"><\/div>\n<p>Instead, she hid her swollen leg in baggy\u00a0clothes and refused to wear\u00a0dresses or skirts for over a decade. She was teased and someone in her school even yelled: \u201cI didn\u2019t know that the Michelin Man went to school\u00a0here.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-144523\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.newsner.com\/attachments\/images\/000\/213\/381\/newsner_default\/12191887_10153686975754304_952516229799430106_n.jpg?1467709090\" alt=\"12191887_10153686975754304_952516229799430106_n\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/meagan.barnard.7\/photos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Image Source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meagan felt so bad that on one occasion, she wrote a suicide note to her\u00a0dad\u2014she just didn\u2019t think\u00a0she could handle it anymore.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-8055472e16035827de1b00a43639068d\" class=\"newsner-8055472e16035827de1b00a43639068d newsner-incide_content_once\"><\/div>\n<p>Meagan\u2019s left leg holds up\u00a0to three liters of extra fluid, and once when she was 24-years-old, it swelled up to more than double the size\u00a0of her right one.<\/p>\n<p>When she got older, she started dating a guy named Robert Neidenfeuhr. According to NZ Herald, Meagan managed to hide the lymphoedema from her boyfriend for two years before eventually revealing it to the world in a photo shoot.<\/p>\n<p>Robert insists he never noticed her swollen leg, not even during their most private moments. \ud83d\udc47\ud83c\udffb<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Neidenfeuhr explained, \u201cShe was extremely careful, but I really didn\u2019t notice. There were lots of closed doors, lots of lights off\u2014that kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1794379677\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-404f4ff6971eab847e2fbb8af0f7b94a\" class=\"newsner-404f4ff6971eab847e2fbb8af0f7b94a newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>The condition means Meagan has up to three litres of excess fluid in her leg, prompting upsetting nicknames including \u201cMichelin Man\u201d.
