Valerie Bertinelli<\/a> has spoken out about a loss within her family that took place before she was born in her new memoir<\/a>, Getting Naked: The Quiet Work of Becoming Perfectly Imperfect<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In her second book <\/a>\u2014 which hit shelves Tuesday \u2014 the former Food Network host opened up about the death of her brother, Mark, who died when he was 17 months old.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t until I was pregnant with [my son] Wolfie that my mom started to open up about Mark,\u201d she wrote, per Us Weekly.<\/em> \u201cBefore then, details about him came out in dribs and drabs. But once I was carrying my own child, she told me about her own pregnancy and what Mark had been like as a baby and a toddler.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bertinelli continued, \u201cHe was her second boy, a bright light, happy and adventurous. He wandered off one afternoon and drank from a glass Coke bottle sitting on a barn shelf without knowing it was storing poison. A part of my mom died that day, too.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018It was tragic,\u2019\u201d Bertinelli remembered her mother telling her. \u201c\u2018But I had a family. I wanted more children. I was already pregnant with you. You find a way forward or \u2026 I guess you don\u2019t.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The One Day at a Time<\/em> star also used her memoir to open up about how she was sexually assaulted<\/a> when she was 11 years old. Speaking to People <\/em>ahead of the book\u2019s release, Bertinelli explained that she never intended to go public with her sexual assault.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had no plans to reveal this,\u201d she told the publication. \u201cThis was going to be a book about teaching people how to love themselves. I did not know that I would go this far.\u201d<\/p>\n

She told the publication that she considered sharing the news as another part of the healing journey. \u201cI guess because I’m healing from it, it\u2019s not so scary anymore,\u201d Bertinelli added. \u201cI can say it out loud. I was sexually assaulted. It doesn’t feel like it owns me anymore.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a survivor,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Bertinelli included a photo of herself at 11 years old in the memoir \u201cbecause that was the little girl that was sexually abused,\u201d she told People<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it boggles my mind that this little girl was taken advantage of that way. It boggles my mind because it\u2019s still happening … and I\u2019m furious about it. And we need to start speaking up and saying, \u2018Enough.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
