After 12 years,\u00a0NCIS<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is bringing back Ziva David\u2019s original, albeit short-lived, replacement in season 23. CBS\u2019 premier procedural seems eager to revive its glory days as the franchise it exists in thrives with 3 spinoffs releasing new episodes this year:\u00a0NCIS: Origins<\/em>,\u00a0NCIS: Tony & Ziva<\/em>, and\u00a0NCIS: Sydney<\/em>. Meanwhile, the flagship is pulling all the stops after\u00a0NCIS\u00a0<\/em>season 22\u2019s ratings drop.<\/p>\n

Ever since\u00a0Tracker<\/em>\u00a0knocked down\u00a0NCIS<\/em>\u00a0from being the most-watched show on network TV, NCIS has been trying to regain momentum. Between cases that leaned far too silly and some character stagnation, the show needed a clearer direction coming into the\u00a02025-2026 TV cycle. All four episodes from\u00a0NCIS<\/em>\u00a0season 23 has been interesting thus far, and it\u2019ll continue that streak with its upcoming one \u2014 its very first crossover with\u00a0NCIS: Origins<\/em>.<\/p>\n

NCIS Season 23 Is Bringing Back Roma Maffia As Vera Franks<\/h2>\n

As previously confirmed,\u00a0Mark Harmon will physically return as Leroy Jethro Gibbs\u00a0in\u00a0NCIS: Origins<\/em>\u2018 leg of the special. There\u2019s no word if the actor will also appear in the flagship, but it will bring back Roma Maffia as Old Vera Strickland. While she\u2019s best known as Mike Franks\u2019 last partner, she was essentially MCRT\u2019s temporary replacement of Ziva.<\/p>\n

Maffia was introduced in\u00a0NCIS<\/em>\u00a0season 11, episode 3, \u201cUnder the Radar\u201d \u2014 the very first episode after Cote de Pablo officially exited the show. The team was still reeling from Ziva\u2019s absence when Vera arrived and joined them for her final month in active service. While the majority of her stint didn\u2019t play on screen, it allowed the team time to hold on introducing Ellie Bishop, who was introduced in\u00a0NCIS<\/em> season 11, episode 9.<\/p>\n

Now, fleshing out Vera\u2019s role is now under NCIS: Origins\u2019 purview, although admittedly, it would help if it would increase her screentime. The character\u2019s return in the flagship, however, can not only bridge the gap between the two shows, but it could also reveal new information about what the future lies for some of the members of Franks\u2019 team.<\/p>\n

Will Cote De Pablo Ever Return To Main NCIS Despite Paramount+\u2019s Tony & Ziva?<\/h2>\n

As for de Pablo, she just wrapped up\u00a0NCIS: Tony & Ziva\u00a0<\/em>on Paramount+ with Michael Weatherly. The spinoff finally pays off the romance between the pair, as they build their new life in Paris with their kid, Tali.\u00a0NCIS: Tony & Ziva<\/em>\u00a0ended with a happy send-off for the characters, and if it doesn\u2019t get a follow-up show, it leaves them in a much better situation than\u00a0NCIS<\/em>\u00a0ever did. That said, there\u2019s still hope that she eventually finds her way back to MCRT, this time with Tony.<\/p>\n

Both de Pablo and\u00a0Weatherly have come back to\u00a0NCIS<\/em>, albeit separately. Considering their continued ties to their former agency, not to mention that their wedding has yet to happen, the door remains open for Ziva to have a Washington DC homecoming.
