She became a legend.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-30fd7c63f1f67ee5ee142cbfd7941775\" class=\"newsner-30fd7c63f1f67ee5ee142cbfd7941775 newsner-bluebillywig_instream\"><\/div>\n<p>But behind the rhinestones and glamour was a woman who rose from hardship in the segregated South to reign as the undisputed <em>Queen of Burlesque<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-from-annie-to-tempest\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Annie to Tempest<\/h2>\n<p>Tempest Storm ruled the stage for more than 60 years \u2014 a remarkable journey that began far from glamour, as her childhood was anything but dazzling.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-0f113736f433769bcd85daab3450e9f9\" class=\"newsner-0f113736f433769bcd85daab3450e9f9 newsner-incide_content_once\"><\/div>\n<p>She was born Annie Blanche Banks on February 29, 1928, in Eastman, Georgia, and grew up in a small farming community.<\/p>\n<p>Poverty and abuse defined her early years, and by 14, she had run away from home to escape. She got a job as a waitress in Columbus, Georgia and married a U.S. Marine to legally free herself from her parents. However, the union was annulled only 24 hours later. I still had it in my mind to go to Hollywood. I couldn\u2019t get it out of my system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By her late teens, she landed in Los Angeles. A casting agent suggested a name that would change her life: Tempest Storm.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-988525312\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-27ade38f0349e06b4be4ffa7772d98c8\" class=\"newsner-27ade38f0349e06b4be4ffa7772d98c8 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201dI asked her if she had any suggestions. She said, what about Tempest Storm? I asked her if she had any other suggestions. Well, she said, what about Sunny Day? Well, I said, I guess it might as well be Tempest Storm,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>That name change marked a turning point in her life, setting her on the road to stardom. While working as a cocktail waitress, a customer recognized her charisma and asked if she could perform a striptease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018What is that?\u2019\u201d Ms. Storm recalled in a 2013 interview with The Quad-City Times. \u201cI was from a small town, I didn\u2019t know. He said it was just dancing, but you take your clothes off. I said: \u2018Oh, no, not me. My mother would disown me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-star-is-born\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A star is born<\/h2>\n<p>Storm made her burlesque debut in the late 1940s, and it didn\u2019t take long before audiences were hooked. Her routines weren\u2019t cheap strip acts \u2014 they were carefully choreographed performances dripping with glamour. Dressed in rhinestone-studded gowns, she teased with elegance, not just shock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI was more respectable then\u201d, she remembered in an interview in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dYou had to wear net panties and a net bra plus jeweled pasties \u2013\u00a0you couldn\u2019t wear a G-string\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>By the mid-1950s, Tempest was reportedly making $100,000 a year \u2014 nearly $950,000 in today\u2019s money. Her famous curves were so legendary that Lloyd\u2019s of London allegedly insured her breasts for $1 million. These films, daring for their era, blurred the lines of comedy, sexuality, and censorship.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-428167766\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-d982036694f16636871c75f62726feb6\" class=\"newsner-d982036694f16636871c75f62726feb6 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-rushed-her-like-a-herd-of-cattle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rushed her like a herd of cattle<\/h2>\n<p>Tempest Storm wasn\u2019t just a performer. She was a pioneer, pushing boundaries for what women could express on stage. Her natural curves and signature red hair became her trademarks.<\/p>\n<p>But unlike many of her peers, she refused plastic surgery, saying her real beauty was enough. She didn\u2019t smoke and avoided anything stronger than orange juice or 7-Up.<\/p>\n<p>At home, she would start her mornings with a crunchy granola breakfast and spend her afternoons enjoying massages, sauna sessions, and time in the whirlpool.<\/p>\n<p>Just how popular was she? A striking example comes from 1955, when she visited the University of Colorado. A crowd of 1,500 students nearly rioted, leaving damage in their wake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey must have been shut up for months without women, they rushed me like a herd of cattle,\u201d Storm recalled.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-interracial-marriage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interracial marriage<\/h2>\n<p>Offstage, Storm\u2019s personal life was as dramatic as her performances.<\/p>\n<p>She was romantically linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/elvis-presley\/\">Elvis Presley<\/a>, Mickey Rooney, and gangster Mickey Cohen. But it was her 1959 marriage to jazz star Herb Jeffries, the first Black singing cowboy in Hollywood, that truly made headlines.<\/p>\n<p>The couple had a daughter, Patricia Ann Jeffries.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-62506337\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-43a391c268d11a6590364dfcaad98fba\" class=\"newsner-43a391c268d11a6590364dfcaad98fba newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>According to The New York Times, her marriage to Jeffries \u201cbroke midcentury racial taboos, costing her work.\u201d Interracial marriage was still illegal in much of the U.S. Suddenly, public interest in Storm began to fade.<\/p>\n<p>Media attention dropped, and she was almost frozen out, far fewer photographers and reporters came to her hometown to cover her story.<\/p>\n<p>The marriage didn\u2019t last, but Storm never backed down from controversy and she and Jeffries remained \u201dcloser than ever\u201d after the breakup.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-still-shining-in-her-80s\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Still shining in her 80s<\/h2>\n<p>Most stars fade with age. Tempest Storm didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>She kept performing into her 60s and made her final stage appearance in her 80s. Even in her later years, she insisted she felt most alive under the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>In 1999, Storm returned to the stage at San Francisco\u2019s O\u2019Farrell Theatre to celebrate the club\u2019s 30th anniversary, prompting Mayor Willie Brown to declare a \u201cTempest Storm Day\u201d in her honor. She fought stereotypes about beauty and womanhood long before \u201cfeminist empowerment\u201d was a mainstream phrase. And she paved the way for modern burlesque stars like Dita Von Teese, who proudly credit Storm as their inspiration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tempest Storm lived up to her name. She was unstoppable. She was unforgettable.
