Janet and Chrissy and Jack end up becoming roommates, with Jack posing as a gay man in order to keep the coed living situation going. TWO OTHER PILOTS WERE MADE BEFORE THEY GOT IT RIGHT.<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">On the first attempt, writer\/producer Larry Gelbart wrote a\u00a0<em>Three&#8217;s Company<\/em>\u00a0pilot script resembling\u00a0<em>Man About the House<\/em>. The two female roommates were actresses named Jenny (played by Valerie Curtin) and Samantha (Susanne Zenor). A second unaired pilot was requested by ABC programming head Fred Silverman, written by\u00a0<em>All in the Family<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Jeffersons<\/em>\u00a0writer\/producers Don Nicholl, Michael Ross, and Bernard West, and featured Joyce DeWitt and Suze Lanier-Bramlett as Chrissy. SUZANNE SOMERS WAS DISCOVERED BY ACCIDENT.<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Desperately searching for the right Chrissy the day before production began, Silverman put in all of the audition tapes they had received and fast-forwarded through them. When he spotted Somers, he stopped the tape and liked what he saw. After never getting a clear answer on why she was passed on in the first place, Somers was summoned to the studio. &#8220;We got her in that day and she was on the set tomorrow and she was terrific in that part,&#8221; the ABC programming chief\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sAxx6F2iynE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"remembered - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">remembered<\/a>. &#8220;And that was an accident because she never should have gotten the part.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">5. THE THEME SONG WAS COMPOSED BY THE SAME MAN WHO WROTE THE THEME SONGS FOR\u00a0<em>SESAME STREET<\/em>\u00a0AND\u00a0<em>THE ELECTRIC COMPANY<\/em>.<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Joe Raposo wrote it, but the producers of\u00a0<em>Three&#8217;s Company<\/em>\u00a0flirted with the idea of having the stars of the show sing the theme. THE BRUNETTE JACK LOOKS AT BEFORE FALLING IN THE OPENING CREDITS IS SUZANNE SOMERS IN A WIG.<\/h2>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">\n&#8220;That brunette is Suzanne with a wig. NORMAN FELL BASED STANLEY ROPER ON A REAL GUY.<\/h2>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Norman Fell (who also played a landlord in\u00a0<em>The Graduate<\/em>) based the character of landlord Stanley Roper on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iSfplRxL8gIC&amp;pg=PA100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iSfplRxL8gIC&amp;pg=PA100\" aria-label=\"a man - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">a man<\/a>\u00a0he knew back in his hometown of Philadelphia. &#8220;I was thinking of a guy I really know in Philadelphia,\u201d Fell said. \u201cThe clothes are all wrong &#8230; He was innocent and a guy who just can&#8217;t do things right, whether it&#8217;s being with a woman or fixing something. And yet he thought he was the cat&#8217;s meow. He thought he was attractive, he liked his clothes. He thought people were looking at him because of how well-preserved he looked. He thought he was all things he&#8217;s not.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">8. FELL WAS PROMISED HE COULD RETURN TO\u00a0<em>THREE\u2019S COMPANY<\/em>\u00a0IF\u00a0<em>THE ROPERS<\/em>\u00a0DIDN&#8217;T LAST FOR MORE THAN ONE YEAR.<\/h2>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Fell wasn\u2019t interested in leaving the very popular\u00a0<em>Three&#8217;s Company<\/em>, but Audra Lindley (Mrs. Roper)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iSfplRxL8gIC&amp;pg=PA100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iSfplRxL8gIC&amp;pg=PA100\" aria-label=\"was game for a spin-off - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">was game for a spin-off<\/a>\u00a0towards the end of the third season. To appease Fell, ABC promised him that if\u00a0<em>The Ropers<\/em>\u00a0was cancelled after one year, Fell and Lindley could return to\u00a0<em>Three\u2019s Company<\/em>. After\u00a0<em>The Ropers<\/em>\u00a0drew the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.people.com\/people\/archive\/article\/0,,20073629,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"http:\/\/www.people.com\/people\/archive\/article\/0,,20073629,00.html\" aria-label=\"second highest ratings - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">second highest ratings<\/a>\u00a0for a series debut in television history at the time in March of 1979, it moved to Saturdays for the second season and viewership dropped enough for it to get cancelled. Fell wanted to return to\u00a0<em>Three&#8217;s Company<\/em>, but producers noted that\u00a0<em>The Ropers<\/em>\u00a0had technically lasted for one and a half years. Besides, the Ropers had already been replaced by Don Knotts as Ralph Furley.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">9. JEFFREY TAMBOR PLAYED THREE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS.<\/h2>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">After he starred as snobby neighbor Jeffrey P. Brookes III in\u00a0<em>The Ropers<\/em>, Tambor found employment again and again and again in late-season episodes of\u00a0<em>Three\u2019s Company<\/em>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/53689\/15-actors-brought-back-play-different-roles-same-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/53689\/15-actors-brought-back-play-different-roles-same-show\" aria-label=\"He was - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">He was<\/a>\u00a0a rich man, Winston Cromwell III, who was after Chrissy in &#8220;Father of the Bride&#8221;; in \u201cTwo Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest,\u201d he played Dr. Tom Miller, a psychiatrist who Jack and Janet confuse for a mental patient; he was also dentist Dr. Phillip Greene, a crazy dentist who was recently dumped by Terri.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">10. WHEN JOHN LARROQUETTE GUEST STARRED AS A COP, HE CHANGED THE SCRIPT SO THAT THE AUDIENCE WOULD SEE HIS FACE.<\/h2>\n<p id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">In the third season episode &#8220;Jack Moves Out&#8221; (spoiler: it doesn&#8217;t last), Larroquette figured that because he was supposed to keep his cop cap on, nobody would get to see his visage. He\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/john-larroquette-2331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/john-larroquette-2331\" aria-label=\"rationalized it for The A.V. And this is all completely selfish and premeditated. So inside my hat, I&#8217;ve written the Miranda rights. So I take my hat off and tell him, &#8216;You have the right to remain silent.&#8217; So my hat is off for the remainder of the scene, which allows you to see my face and my confidence, as it were. Had I not thought of that, it would have just been this hated cop figure for 30 seconds or whatever, and no one would have really known who he was.&#8221; The producers clearly didn\u2019t mind the change; they left the scene intact.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-21\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">11. SOMERS LEFT THE SHOW BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO BE PAID AS MUCH AS RITTER.<\/h2>\n<p id=\"inline-text-22\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Somers asked for an increase from $30,000 to $150,000 per episode,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/suzanne-somers-fired-threes-company-raise-career-worth-2015-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/suzanne-somers-fired-threes-company-raise-career-worth-2015-6\" aria-label=\"Ritter's salary at the time - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">Ritter&#8217;s salary at the time<\/a>, as well as 10 percent of the show&#8217;s profits. ABC was offering a $5000 pay raise.
